  • Savvy Senior: Can COBID-19 cause shingles?

    Jim Miller|Feb 28, 2022

Dear Savvy Senior, How effective is the shingles vaccine and what is the CDC recommendation for getting it? My older brother and sister, both in their fifties, got COVID a few months back followed by shingles. Do you know if there is a connection between these viruses, and would the shingles vaccine have protected them? Scared of shingles Dear Scared, Great question! Many healthcare professionals across the country have been urging their older patients to get the shingles vaccine (in addition...

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 28, 2022

They may not have had the biggest team at the State B Individual Wrestling Tournament, but the ones who showed up for Carrington made quite an impact. Three Cardinal wrestlers captured state championships, and one other made the finals match in their respective weight classes Thursday and Friday, February 17-18, at the Fargodome. The tournament marked the end of the legendary careers of seniors Brecken Lura and Michael Clifton with state championships, and another senior, Matthew Duchscherer,...

  • Rockets head into post-season 4-14 overall

    Nathan Price|Feb 28, 2022

On Monday, Feb. 21, New Rockford-Sheyenne wrapped up their regular season with an anti-climactic 49-34 loss to the North Star Bearcats at home. Despite what the final score suggests, Monday's contest was one of the Rockets' strongest performances this season... at least, for three quarters it was. The Bearcats came to New Rockford as heavy favorites, having earned a 15-3 overall record and the reputation of a top team in Region 4. The Rockets didn't seem to care. The first quarter set the tone...

  • Lightning strikes thrice; but to no avail

    Nathan Price|Feb 28, 2022

On Thursday, Feb. 17, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets fell to the Hatton/Northwood Thunder by a score of 58-61. The Rockets entered their penultimate regular-season matchup with hopes of generating momentum for the District 7 tournament, and they were on pace to do exactly that... for a while. The opening minutes saw NR-S come out swinging in the first quarter, going pound-for-pound and shot-for-shot with Hatton/Northwood, who entered Thursday's matchup as clear favorites. Both teams were...

  • Dakota Recreation Report: Feb. 28, 2022

    Patricia Stockdill|Feb 28, 2022

Outdoor notes: *Check icehouses after last week’s warm spell so it’s not iced in and can be removed before the March 15 deadline. *Ice is never completely safe. Avoid areas with vegetation, moving water, pressure ridges, and springs. Check conditions as you go along on the ice and don’t move around at night. *Remember to keep fish caught in 25 feet and deeper; they rarely survive coming up from deep depths. Fishing: *Devils Lake elevation, Feb. 22: 1,447.2 feet above mean sea level (MSL). *Stum...

  • Our Outdoors: A touch of spring

    Nick Simonson|Feb 28, 2022

The wakeup temperature on Saturday morning was seven above. Slackjawed, I stared at the readout in the upper right corner of my watch and laughed. I thought no way was that single digit reading ever going to reach the 48 degrees promised on the far side of the curve as I stepped into the garage and wistfully looked over my puddle jumper parked in my truck's usual spot to defrost. The dogs whined with excitement for their morning walk as I clipped the leashes to their collars and opened the...

  • The Peluso Report: The Good & The Bad

    Mike Peluso|Feb 28, 2022

As my ice guiding season nears its end, one thing comes to mind and that is it has been a super tough winter with the conditions we have faced. One common theme has been wind; it hasn't been just a little breezy at times, but darn near hurricane-like. This has got to play havoc on the fish with these massive pressure changes, not to mention the massive temperature shifts we keep seeing. If I had to describe this week up here on Devils Lake, I'd say it's been both good and bad. When it's good...

  • NASP Grows Ahead of 2022 State Tourney

    Nick Simonson|Feb 28, 2022

Like many other youth-oriented activities, the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) powered its way through the pandemic year, with virtual events serving in place of the state tournaments normally held each March in North Dakota. With more than 15,000 participants in grades 4 through 12 in the state and an in-person season-ending event in Minot on the calendar for Mar. 18 and 19, the program now appears back on trajectory in 2022 to bring more archers into the fold, and to recruit more bo...

  • Dakota Gardener: Feb. 28, 2022

    Carrie Knutson|Feb 28, 2022

Last month, I discussed getting ready for starting garden seeds. Hopefully, you have your supplies ready to go. Now the most important supply you need is patience! Sadly, it isn’t time for most garden seeds to be started. It is still too early. Why must I wait, you ask? Vegetable plants are not meant to be grown inside for extended periods of time. Plants use sunlight to convert oxygen and water into carbohydrates or energy. This process is called photosynthesis and happens inside chlorophyll molecules in plants. If plants do not have enough s...
