  • AARP North Dakota Scam Alert: It's tax time, avoid being scammed

    Feb 11, 2019

We often put off doing our taxes until the last minute. But there’s one very good reason to file well before April 15— it’s your best defense against tax-related identity theft. Tax ID scams usually work like this: Someone who has obtained personal information such as your Social Security number and date of birth files a tax return in your name. They do so as early as possible, because the scam relies on the phony return getting to the Internal Revenue Service ahead of the real one. By the time you file, the scammer may have already gotten a re...

  • Partisan is a dirty word in local government

    LLoyd Omdahl|Feb 11, 2019

In the present acrid climate of partisan politics, it is remarkable that several legislators would even propose partisan elections for North Dakota local governments. Sponsors of the measure have had very limited hands-on experience in local government and since their rise came the political route they have concluded this is the only way to elect qualified officials. It smacks of self-aggrandizement. The arguments offered by the sponsors in favor of partisan local elections were specious and...

  • Letter to the Editor: HB 1388 "simple" tweak has big time implications

    Feb 11, 2019

Two years ago, 75 percent of North Dakotans voted in favor of family farms. Last year, a district court upheld the constitutionality of our law. Despite that, the North Dakota Legislature is yet again taking up a bill to weaken the Corporate Farming Law. At first glance HB 1388, which was recently introduced in the North Dakota State Legislature, seems pro-family. It adds just two words – second cousin – to the list of kin that can legally form a corporation or a limited liability corporation in the state for farming and ranching. Some hav...

  • Do you hate night driving, too?

    Danny Tyree|Feb 11, 2019

On a recent Saturday evening, I had the pleasure of picking up my son after his chess tournament. Whether on my quiet country road or in the well-illuminated industrial park, I enjoyed driving through what Louis Armstrong sang of as "the dark sacred night." A much more TYPICAL excursion happened a few months ago when I drove to another town at dusk to deal with insurance matters. As I navigated the two-lane road, every vehicle I met seared my eyeballs with headlights that in a previous life...

  • Time to embrace cursive handwriting again

    Tom Purcell|Feb 11, 2019

While organizing my home office a few weeks ago, I came across a letter my grandfather wrote back in 1924. He wrote that eloquent letter to his best friend’s wife, consoling her on the loss of her mother. His cursive handwriting was artful - perfect penmanship. He wrote the letter when he was 21. Since he died at 34, when my father was only 3, it is among the most cherished items I have from a grandfather I never got to meet. Such is the power of the handwritten letter, an art that has died a...

  • Living on Purpose: Do we care what God thinks?

    Dr. Billy Holland|Feb 11, 2019

Is God always happy? Well, let me see, this is an unusual question but I would say probably not. Since he is not made of flesh we assume that he does not have emotions like us. But, on the other hand, we read about his demonstrations of compassion and anger, so I guess this is still up for debate. It is my opinion that some things please him and others cause him disappointment and most of it is associated with the way people live. So, what do you think makes him happy? Well, again we have the sc...

At 10 p.m. they walked to Ohrner’s Hall, which had been decorated with flowers. Places were set for 80, but two places were empty due to illness. Many dishes were April Fool’s jokes made up of inedible or unpalatable portions cleverly disguised by the ladies. Prizes were awarded to the most g...

Three Men in a Blizzard Feb. 13, 2019 — In “A History of Foster County,” there’s a story of how three friends survived the big blizzard of 1886. • Eyes that see the good in things- Feb. 11, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Feb 11, 2019

I have to confess that I’ve always been a little cynical about Valentine’s Day celebrations. It was never one of those important holidays to me and one that I wouldn’t be heartbroken if it was forgotten. Although, honestly, with all the hearts, flowers, cards, stuffed animals and decorations that are displayed in stores, it would be pretty hard to forget Valentine’s Day, wouldn’t it? Don’t get me wrong— I wouldn’t be very happy if my birthday or anniversary were forgotten. And I’m all about m...
