The barnstorming tour, organized by Feller and conceived on his long, dangerous shifts manning anti-a...

  • Clarity's cost: the $5 million comma

    Feb 3, 2020

Clarity is in short supply across America, but no longer at dairy farms in Maine. In 2014, you see, drivers for a dairy company in Portland, Maine sued their employer for overtime pay because a state law pertaining to overtime-pay exemptions failed to include the Oxford comma. What is the Oxford comma? It’s the final comma in a list of things, Grammarly explains. In Grammarly’s example, the Oxford comma appears after the word “eraser”: “Please bring me a pencil, eraser, and notebook.” Few use the Oxford comma anymore. Most newspapers,...

  • Impeachment trial is a civics lesson, not must-watch tv

    Feb 3, 2020

More than once, readers have written in, or people have stopped me, to complain about their fellow Americans’ ignorance of the basic functions of government. Incandescent with anger, they’ll complain that, while their neighbors don’t know the name of their local member of Congress, they can absolutely tell you what happened on the latest episode of “The Real Housewives of Ulan Bator” or wherever it’s now filming. The answer, as constant as the northern star, is that the kids need to be sent back to civics class. These complaints, while smack...

  • Sermonette: Message or Messenger

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson|Feb 3, 2020

I don't know how it all started, but someplace along the line the people on Madison Avenue in New York City decided that it would make an easier sell to have somebody important touting their products. Madison Avenue in New York is to advertising like Wall Street is to stocks and bonds and finance. Personally I don't care who endorses a product. It might be a world-famous athlete, the world's richest person, or the world's most beautiful woman I don't care. If I like something I buy it, if I don't, I won't. Simple as that. I've met some very...

That’s the thing about media – songs, films, YouTube videos – they all live well beyond their years. If you think you don’t know who Abbott and Costello are, then I encourage you to do a quick Internet search. What did you find? Or should I ask ‘who’ did you find? The Who’s on First Routine is perhaps one of the most well known...
