  • Still think everything is awful? Here are three reasons for hope.

    John L. Micek|Oct 17, 2022

Step away from Twitter. Stop doom-scrolling. Yes, I know, American democracy is under assault. Russian President Vladimir Putin is muttering dark warnings about nuclear weapons in the face of heroic and historic resistance by Ukraine. Dozens of people are dead and large swaths of Florida have been devastated by Hurricane Ian. And Kanye West did something so uniformly awful in Paris that I was forced to Google the tone-deaf thing that Kanye West did in Paris. These are bleak times, indeed. And the urge to simply throw your hands up in the air...

  • Getting older means saying goodbye to friends

    John L. Micek|Sep 19, 2022

There are stubborn and unwelcome facts about getting older. The gray hairs that weren't there the day before. The injuries from running or other sports that come easier and are harder to shake off than they were before. And your friends die. This summer, I've said farewell to two dear friends who, as dear friends do, shaped my life in their own unique and individual ways. Both of them were named Robert. And though they never met, the interwoven threads of their friendships can never be unraveled. In early July, Robb Hanrahan, a veteran televisi...

  • 'I know my path:' after DACA ruling teen's future looks bright

    John L. Micek|Jun 29, 2020

When she woke up last Thursday morning, 17-year-old Arlette Morales pulled on a “Home is Here” t-shirt. She didn’t know how prophetic it was. Hours later, Morales, who was two years old when her parents brought her to the United States from Mexico, learned he Supreme Court salvaged an Obama-era program that has allowed hundreds of thousands of young, unauthorized immigrants – just like her – known as “Dreamers” to remain in the country without immediate fear of deportation. “I was like, ‘Hold up. This is something that affects me,” she...

  • Election 2020 is an existential fight for the nation's soul

    John L. Micek|Mar 16, 2020

You’ve probably never heard of Erica Newland. And if she had her druthers, it’s a safe bet that she would have preferred it stayed that way. But Newland, a former attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel, found herself a front-line warrior in the battle to protect the Constitution from the excesses of President Donald Trump. Newland, who is both Jewish and a civil libertarian, grew increasingly uncomfortable with the administration’s attacks on non-citizens. And one exchange, included in George Packer’s extraordinary...

  • Talking to my daughter about war and 'megafires'

    John L. Micek|Jan 20, 2020

We were on the way to ballet rehearsal. It’s my favorite 30 minutes of the day. It’s a chance to break away from work, and to touch base with my only child. She’s 14 now. And it won’t be long before she’s driving herself. I treasure these moments.  “So,” I asked her. “How was school today?”  “We were arguing about whether we’re more likely to die from World War III or climate change,” she said.  Her response stopped me cold, but I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised.  With the dogs of war straining at the leash, the missiles flying in Iran,...

  • No, I don't hate conservatives. I disagree with them.

    John L. Micek|Apr 30, 2018

Not too long ago, an anonymous commenter on one of my columns concluded that I took my stance on a particular issue because I “hate conservatives.” A couple of days later, a progressive friend who wanted to warn me about a hateful tweet aimed at a Muslim lobbying day at the Pennsylvania Capitol, jokingly observed that she tried to keep her feed “a happy bubble of the like-minded” but this one had slipped through. These two incidents speak volumes about where we are as a country these days. We’re deeply entrenched in our own worldview...
